Dorothy Louisa Mabley
Dorothy Mabley was born in Richmond Hill, Ontario to Arthur Ashley and Hazel (Lubbock) Eden on November 16, 1922. She died peacefully on January 26, 2021 at Grove Park Home, Barrie, Ontario. She is survived by step-children Jane Walker (John), Edmonton, Alberta; Dr. John Mabley (Heather), Oyster Pond, Nova Scotia; Dr. Bruce Mabley (Jacqueline), Rigaud, Quebec. She was predeceased by her parents and devoted husband, Clarence Borden.
Dorothy graduated from the The Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing, Toronto, in 1944 and immediately joined the Hospital staff. After receiving her Certificate in Clinical Supervision from University of Toronto, she become a clinical instructor in medicine and later nursing arts instructor. She earned the BScN degree in 1966 also at University of Toronto and was subsequently named Wellesley’s assistant director of nursing education followed by promotion to full director in 1967. When authority for The Wellesley School of Nursing was transferred to Ryerson Polytechnic University, she received her MScN degree from the University of Western Ontario and joined Ryerson’s faculty. Dorothy married widower Clare, also a native of Richmond Hill, in 1975 and they formed an inseparable, loving team through 33 years of life together. They enjoyed homes and neighbours in Agincourt, Thornhill and finally Barrie, with golfing breaks in Clearwater, Florida for several winters prior to entering Simcoe Terrace Retirement Centre. Clare passed away in 2008 and Dorothy moved to Grove Park Home in 2013 for long term care. In the last years of her life she struggled with dementia, although her nursing instinct to “make daily rounds” endeared Mom to Grove Park staff and fellow residents alike. The family extends heartfelt appreciation to Dorothy’s former student, Anne Ollikainen, for her countless caring acts, as well as faithful friend Elizabeth Luscombe who, with Grove Park Home staff, sparked Dorothy’s spirits through the loneliness of dementia and profound deafness. Public health restrictions permitting, a date will be announced for friends and family to gather this summer to celebrate Dorothy’s life and interment of remains at Aurora Cemetary, Aurora, Ontario.
