Donald Charles Covell

October 25, 1937 ~ October 12, 2020 (age 82)

Covell, Donald - On Oct 12, at 82, surrounded by his beloved wife, children, grandchildren, and his sister, Donald (Skinny, Dad, Gramps) Charles Covell passed away peacefully at home. Don leaves behind his wife, Leona Mae, his daughters, Deborah, Pamela (Bruce), and son Scott (Francoise), grandchildren Kelsey, Lauren (Jonny), Quinn, Emma and Jack, his sister Marie (Doug) and many nieces and nephews who will all miss him dearly.  After golfing 18 holes, Dad went into hospital with heart failure in July.  He battled hard to recover, but eventually said “well I guess that’s it then” and just wanted to be home.

Born in Toronto, Don’s authentic and engaging character led him to a successful career in sales, while his bride put her energy into the family home raising three kids first in Sudbury, and then on to Barrie where they lived for 50 years.  Our dad was truly a legend; his joke telling is renowned among all who knew and loved him, and his song and dance were a sound and sight to behold. But it’s his positive personality, his generosity, fair-mindedness, zest for adventure, and his appreciation of the simple things in life we will remember most.  Playing golf with his son at his home club on the nine holes Scott designed, swinging Deb around on the dance floor, harmonizing “Tell Me Why” with Lee, playing a competitive game of Yahtzee with team DonSey vs LeeLaur, driving Pamela anywhere she needed to be, bringing Timbits to the twins, and swimming with his grandson are the moments which led dad to reflect that he “lived a joyous life and had a ball”.

Don was so grateful when his sister Marie finally moved to Barrie “we shared all our friends, just like when we were kids”.  He relished game nights with family and friends, playing to win “well why else would you play,” but always classy when defeated (which wasn’t often), while partaking in a good bottle of scotch.  Watching sports was a constant, a loyal fan of the Leafs dad never said a negative word about them or anyone, “there’s always next year!”

Don always had a song in his head, and love in his heart.  The night before Dad passed, we had a sing-song around his bed, marched to his favourite song, and celebrated his love of music, family, and being together.  We wondered if while sleeping, he was dreaming that we were actually in key!  We love you Don, Skinny, dad, gramps, Covell.  You have a busy time ahead; your dad is playing your song on the piano, your mom is begging you to sing, Ted and Norma are smiling at their little brother, Holly and Paul have set up a tee time, Curly and Larry have a rousing debate for their Moe, Uncle Bob is baiting your hook, and Tom is waiting for his partner to help slay a new audience with your jokes!  Your children will take care of your “darling” now, so you have time to do all of that and hang around in our hearts forever.  Go Leafs Go!  Not a day will go by when our memories of you won’t bring a tear and a smile!  We will never lose our sense of humour - it’s in our genes!  Love you most.

We are grateful to the staff of the Cardiac Renal Unit at RVH, a special thank you to Peter.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life for Don will take place at a later date.
